GOODWILL FORT WORTH TO PROVIDE DIGITAL SKILLS TRAINING
New initiative, funded by Google, will help Fort Worth area residents advance their careers
FORT WORTH, Texas (December 18, 2017) — Google.org and Goodwill, the United States’ leading workforce development nonprofit, have announced the launch of the Goodwill Digital Career AcceleratorSM. Funded by a $10 million grant from Google.org and with the assistance of 1,000 Google volunteers, the new Goodwill initiative will enable more than one million people — including people with disabilities and disadvantages, youth, older workers, veterans and military families, and people who are transitioning back into society — to receive digital skills training over the next three years.
Goodwill Industries of Fort Worth is among the 125 local Goodwill organizations that were competitively chosen to be the first to provide these digital skills training services that develop more marketable workers for the digital age.
“The Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator initiative means we at Goodwill Fort Worth will have one more tool to help members of our local community to build their skills and expand their career options,” said David Cox, President & CEO of Goodwill Fort Worth. “There is no question that workers with up-to-date digital skills will be in a better position to advance in today’s labor market.”
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, there are more than 6 million job openings in the United States. Many of these jobs remain unfilled because job applicants lack specific skills employers report they need. This innovative initiative will allow Goodwill organizations to enhance their job training programs to incorporate the ever-changing demand for new skills in the digital economy, and build the capacity of Goodwill organizations to equip their employees and participants with those skills. As part of the Digital Career Accelerator, 1,000 Google employees will volunteer with Goodwill organizations over the next three years to provide training and career coaching sessions.
Digital skills include basic computer skills that would be used to establish an email address, apply for a job or perform many entry level tasks. More advanced digital skills include computer support or programming, digital marketing, and cybersecurity, which are increasingly relevant for achieving well-paying, in-demand careers across the country.
“As a baseline, employers look for workers and job applicants who can proficiently use computers and other electronic devices,” said Jacquelline Fuller, CEO of Google.org. “The Goodwill Digital Career Accelerator will greatly assist those hoping to get ahead in their careers and obtain the types of jobs that will remain in demand for years to come in a demanding digital economy.”
With this investment, local U.S. Goodwill organizations have three options for participation in the grant, based on their current digital skills training operations, capacity to initiate, enhance or expand digital skills training, and local labor market demand. Those three options include Digital Change Agents, Digital Champions and Digital Enthusiasts. Goodwill Fort Worth will be a Digital Champion and receive a $50,000 grant to fund its participation. As part of the initiative, Goodwill Fort Worth will engage in extensive learning and technical assistance opportunities to help enhance and expand training offerings.
